It’s Time to give ‘Hot Fish Buns’ a Run Again

The Hot Cross Bun is so common all year round nowadays that for most in the West it has largely lost its meaning. So here is a Flyer that (together with a Bun!) can draw people back to the real meaning of Easter.

In the first centuries A.D, society was hostile to Christians, so rather than using the Cross to identify themselves they often used the fish mark, which attracted little attention.

Further, those early Christians used the letters that make up the Greek New Testament word for fish (ICHTHUS) as an Acrostic to explain the meaning of the Christian faith.

I    – Iēsous –   Jesus

Ch  – Christos –  Christ

Th – Theou –    God’s

U   – Uios –      Son

S    – Swtēr –    Saviour

Now in shops on the day after Christmas, the traditional Hot Cross Bun has lost its meaning to most westerners, but the fish symbol can remind us of the central meaning of, and great offer of, Easter (Hence Hot Fish Buns). That offer is God’s free gift of his Son Jesus whom, because of his love for us, he sent to the Cross that we might be saved from the consequences of our choosing to ‘do our own thing’ and to live our lives independent of him.

Easter – what a great time to grab that gift!
