An Unbounded Church Thinking Point

‘Good God, Why Evil?’.

***

When some evil event occurs, for example the death of an innocent child, or even a baby, or other vulnerable person, some will point to this as a reason for denying God’s existence. For they will say-

If your God is the all-powerful, all-loving being you claim him to be, why didn’t he intervene to stop this happening? The fact that he didn’t means that he is either not all-powerful or all-loving’.

In such a conversation we should not give simplistic answers, for it is not actually a simple issue.

For example, imagine a man buys an axe with a sharp blade for the legitimate purpose of chopping wood. However, he gets into a violent argument with a friend whom he strikes with the axe and kills him. How do we think God should have intervened?

Should he have turned the axe into rubber seconds before the blow?

Or should he have frozen the man’s arm as he went to strike?

How does your answer to those questions square with the Biblical teaching that God has given humans free-will?

If humans do not have free will, what would that make us?
